ESTONIAN DAY

At Camp Moore, we had Estonian Day where we raised the Estonian flag along with the USA flag and our international counselor taught an equivalent to the Pledge of Allegiance.  We also replaced all the signs in camp to the Estonian language and taught the kids how to pronounce them from the walking sticks in our nature center to the restrooms.  We had Estonian snack and a song at afternoon assembly and did a craft project.  We basically turned the world camp around to reflect the Estonian culture.  Because we also had an Australian and Russian counselors, we had days dedicated to their cultures as well.  The supplies needed - were sign material (tag board - permanent pens) and the country flag.  Snack and crafts were coordinated between the staff member and director.  We also played an Estonian game (all camp) and had lunch time discussion groups (small) about similarities/differences in our cultures.  We also dedicated two books on Estonia to our library in the staff’s name and permanently hung their flag on our lodge.

How did the activity increase international understanding and/or cultural awareness among your campers and staff?

The kids and staff learned language, traditions, games, food, songs, etc. in a fun one-day adventure.  Because we were immersed in the culture for a day, we retained more and it sparked many discussions.  The counselor felt like things were easier after that day because everyone had a better understanding of him.
