FLIGHT NIGHT
International Program for Resident or Day Camps

Program Objective:    To offer campers the opportunity to learn more about the heritage of each of our counselors.

Program Description: Each counselor group with a similar heritage developed a seven minute presentation to best inform campers about their culture.  Each country/group was assigned a particular area in which to present, and then campers rotated through the different stations.  The best part about this program is the transportation of campers from station to station.  The campers were gathered and told that they were about to take a great adventure around the world.  Then they were split into as many “flights” as we had stations plus one.  Each “flight” was assigned a flight crew that included a pilot and steward.  The groups/flights were treated as you would expect on a regular flight.  The crew utilized their scripts to instruct passengers on safety requirements, flight destinations, arrival times and interesting sights along the way.  Each flight had an opportunity to visit each country/group and also survived a terrorist attack and an emergency water landing as they crossed over the ocean (or the docks of the lake/pool).  Each flight also were treated to snack and beverage service when they received their wings.

Length of Time:           Two hours if you have a large international staff.  The amazing thing is the campers will remain interested throughout the whole event.

Number of Part:          Divide your camp by the number of different countries you have plus one (the extra one is to visit snack and beverage service on a rotating basis.)

Materials:                     Each country/group is to provide their own props, hopefully authentic.  Examples may be: Vegemite samples, instruments for different countries, pictures, flags, clothing, etc. Snacks will be needed for the snack and beverage area.  We were able to get flight wings (the small plastic pins) donated from a local airline.

How did the activity increase international understanding and/or cultural awareness among your campers and staff?

After the program took place, as an all camp, campers gathered by age group to discuss/process what they had just participated in.  Campers were amazed at some of the differences between countries, but were also surprised with the amount of similarities.  But almost all of them disliked the Vegemite.  One thing that always caught campers off guard was the fact that some of the cultures of their own community were represented.  We encouraged staff to develop a station for American culture and history, African American culture and Asian American culture as well as other local representations.

Each aspect of this international activity was a great success in helping campers understand and appreciate different cultures and beliefs in our world.
