FLIGHT NIGHT

This is a great activity if you have five or more countries represented amongst staff.  We call it “Flight Night”.  Each counselor sets up a different area of camp (cabin, building, porch, corner of the dining hall) as their country with props, posters, music, decorations they’ve brought from home.  The campers are divided into even groups (groups should equal the number of countries).  Each group is a flight number and the counselor is their flight attendant.  Each group flies to a different country where they are welcomed by the international and told about the country.  Each counselor gets about 10 minutes.  Between countries flights may run into turbulence - counselors coming up to the campers and shaking them, bad weather - water being tossed on them, terrorism - counselors making the flight sing a song.  Everyone ends up in the center of camp in the USA where music is played and a snack ends up the evening.

How did the activity increase international understanding and/or cultural awareness among your campers and staff?

Having fun, but hard work.  This activity has been the best for us in terms of raising cultural awareness.  Make sure staff don’t get stale on it.  Especially, if you do it every week.
