HOLIDAYS AROUND THE WORLD

At Camp Pepin, every week has a theme.  One week is designated “Holidays around the World”.  The international staff are in charge of this week.  We celebrated Swedish Midsummer Day by having the campers erect a May Day Pole complete with flowers.  The Swedish counselor taught the staff the Frog Dance.  The staff taught the campers and the entire camp danced around the May Pole doing the Frog Dance.  We kept the May Pole out so parents could see it.  One parent wanted to use the May Pole for her wedding.  We also celebrated Hungary’s “Easter” with the tradition of decorating eggs and exchanging them.  For Latvia we made crowns and passed around food from Latvia.

Materials needed:

  • 2 long poles

  • twine

  • flowers

  • shovel for digging dirt

  • music for Swedish Frog Dance

How did the activity increase international understanding and/or cultural awareness among your campers and staff?

By having the campers fully participating in making the May Pole, they learned that each country celebrates differently and that’s GREAT!  They realized how big this world is and there are different ways to celebrate the same holiday.
