INCORPORATING THE INTERNATIONAL THEME  

There are a variety of activities that take place throughout the summer at Tomahawk Ranch.  All of the units (groupings of girls) make informational and instructional signs in English and in the language of the Counselor’s country.  Songs are taught throughout the summer in other languages.  Holidays of other countries are celebrated throughout the summer.  There is an opening night skit where all the counselors sing the same song in the language of all the countries represented by the international counselors.  There is also a world map in the dining hall where the international counselors mark which country they are from.  

How did the activity increase international understanding and/or cultural awareness among your campers and staff?  

We found that by incorporating the international theme throughout the summer in different areas of the camp that all of the children who attend camp throughout the summer are aware of the counselors and their culture.  Parents have commented to us through their evaluations of how their children had learned words, songs or stories from the counselors while at camp and felt this was a good experience for them.
