INTERNATIONAL CORNER

We set up an international corner in our Dining Hall.  The flags, travel posters, and other items native to our counselors country were exhibited.  A map of the world was low down on the wall with the caption “Where in the world have you been?”  Campers and staff were encouraged to mark on the map where they lived and places they had visited.  The counselor would be at that table after meals a few times a week to talk to the campers and to answer questions.

This activity had almost no cost ($5.00 for the map poster) included items brought by the counselor, only needed one hour or so set up time.  Program time easily accommodates time available and can support about any number of participants, but small groups are best.

How did the activity increase international understanding and/or cultural awareness among your campers and staff?

It was fun and interesting to learn from someone who lived in another country, but to me the best part was not just learning and appreciating how we are different, but learning how we are alike.  We may have language, geographic, and cultural differences, but all people have loves, hates, fears, fantasies, family, etc.  We are all God’s Children.
