INTERNATIONAL FOODS |
||||
|
While the need to eat is universal, what we eat certainly is not. During one session YMCA Camp Sloper has its staff prepare international foods which are placed on a series of tables representing different parts of the world. Small groups of campers rotate from table to table and are encouraged to sample foods as diverse as Indian curry, Australian Vegemite, Ukrainian cold beet salad, Colombian fruit shakes, Mexican tacos, German sausage, and New York bagels. The activity is especially effective when international staff are available to talk about food customs in their home country. INTERNATIONAL HOT DOG FESTIVAL YMCA Camp Sloper has had an international hot dog festival featuring toppings from around the world. While hot dogs are not eaten everywhere, they supplied a firm base for testing relishes, sauces, chopped edibles, etc. prepared by the staff. How did the activity increase international understanding and/or cultural awareness among your campers and staff? These activities work very well with young children to introduce the idea that different people have different ideas of what is common. With teens they provide an excellent introduction for later discussions on world food issues: food production and distribution, world hunger, world dietary patterns, etc. Camp Sloper has a “Logs Time” when campers ask international staff questions about where they are from, what are their favorite foods, how their country is different, etc. This international program idea submitted by:
