INTERNATIONAL NIGHT

A large portion (20%) of our staff is international.  At Mountain Camp we have a different evening program theme every night.  One of our most popular evenings is “International Night” (also called “Around the World Night”).  Each cabin is given a passport and they must, as a group, visit all the countries represented by the camp staff.  Each country sets up games and food from their homeland.  For example, when the kids visit Spain they play a game that reenacts the Running of the Bulls and drink sangria.  Then they go play cricket with the English.  Next they visit Holland where they learn how the Dutch celebrate a birthday and etc., etc.  At the end everyone gathers around the campfire where we sing songs from around the world.

How did the activity increase international understanding and/or cultural awareness among your campers and staff?

The program gives a chance for our counselors - who are proud of their cultures - to share traditions from their homelands with the rest of camp.   This program idea could easily be made into a longer - “Carnival Day” type program.
