Applying for your J-1 visa

Contact the US Embassy or Consulate in your home country to find out how to apply for the US visa. Many Embassies are requiring visa applicants to attend an in-person interview which may have to be scheduled several weeks in advance. You will need to submit the following items when you apply for your visa:

  • Your passport
  • DS-2019
  • Visa application forms - this includes several different forms
  • Passport Photo - Embassies are very specific regarding acceptable photos. Follow their instructions exactly.

  • Visa fees - minimum of US $100. Some nationalities must pay an additional fee.
  • Receipt for payment of SEVIS fee.

  •   We recommend that you include additional documents with your visa application. During the brief interview and review of your visa application and supporting documents, you must show that you have a permanent residence and other ties in your home country that would compel you to leave the USA at the end of your temporary stay. Such evidence might include:
    • Evidence that you own or rent a house or apartment
    • Evidence you have a job waiting on your return
    • A letter from your university stating you are enrolled and expected to return by a specific date
    • An offer for a University place when you return
    • Marriage certificate
    • Birth certificates of any children you have
    • Names & addresses of family members in your home country
    • A recent bank statement
    • Your voter registration card
    • A letter from your religious leader attesting to your intent to return
    • Character reference from a professional person, stating their confidence in your intent to return
    • A copy of the travel itinerary for your proposed return travel (we advise you NOT to purchase your travel tickets before receiving your visa)
    • Evidence you have other commitments that would require you to leave the USA at the end of the visa period

You are eligible for an exchange visitor visa (J-1) because you are a participant in an educational exchange program approved by the US Department of State. The US Embassy where you apply for your visa will ultimately decide whether to approve your application for the J-1 visa. Each person's situation is different and consular officers examine the long-range plans and prospects you have within your country of residence. The YMCA cannot influence their decision in any way.
