Arrival in the USA - going through immigration: |
| |
Be calm, honest and polite to the Immigration officers.
|
| |
Upon arrival in the USA you will need to have your DS-2019 form and your J-1 Visa to present to the Immigration official. They will stamp several things and give you back the original copy of your DS-2019 form and a white I-94 entry form. Both of these documents need to stay with your passport while you are in the USA. The I-94 form will be taken when you leave.
|
| |
The U.S. immigration officer at your point of entry has the final say on entering the United States, so it is advisable to have some proof of your agreement with the employer/summer camp available when you pass through immigration.
|
| |
If you have a multiple entry visa (usually indicated with an 'M' under 'Entries' on your J-1 visa) and decide to travel to Mexico or Canada while you are here, you must have the DS-2019 form to be re-admitted to the USA. Your program sponsor (the YMCA) must re-sign that you are in good standing on the Work/Travel Program before you leave the USA. See the 'Travel Authorization' section in the lower right corner of the DS-2019.

Visa related things you MUST do AFTER arrival in the US: |
| |
Within ten days of arriving in the United States you MUST report your residential address to your visa sponsor (YMCA). Register your US residential address online at
www.internationalymca.org.
|
| |
If you change addresses at any time during the summer, you must report your new address within 10 days of moving. Do this at
www.internationalymca.org.
|
| |
You must file a tentative itinerary with your sponsor (YMCA before beginning the 30-day end-of-stay travel period.
|
| |
You must begin your job placement within 30 days of the start date on your DS-2019. If this is not possible, contact the YMCA.
|
| |
Failure to submit an end-of-stay evaluation could interfere with the issuing of future visas to the USA.
|
| |
Failure to comply with all reporting requirements of your visa will result in loss of visa status.
