Before You Leave

Before you leave home, be sure you have considered the following:

Obtain your visa in sufficient time. Do not leave it to the last minute. International YMCA Branch does not assist with visa applications. It is your responsibility to get the visa and all other documents, such as exit visas,
medical reports (if your employer requires it), and
proof of student status that you will need in sufficient
time.

Allow approximately 6 weeks to obtain the US visa after you have received your DS-2019 and longer if you are from a non-European country.

Confirm job details with your employer. You will need to clarify with your U.S. employer/supervisor who will be responsible for making international and domestic travel arrangements, what date you are expected, what your salary will be, when you will be paid, and what dates you are expected to be at the site. It is vital for you stay in contact with your supervisor in the weeks preceding your arrival. If someone else has helped you find a job, it is crucial that YOU speak DIRECTLY with the supervisor to confirm the job. Some employers require medical reports. We recommend getting these done in your own country; if you do not 'medical reports' or check-ups are not covered on the medical insurance and will cost you approximately $100 in the USA.

Research transportation options. Arrange or at least research how you are going to get from the airport or your first night's hostel to your job/summer camp. It is cheaper to arrange transportation to your job/employer or hostel in advance and more expensive to buy a ticket at the airport on the day you arrive. Do your research!

Confirm your arrival date and time with the supervisor at your job/summer camp. It is common courtesy to notify them when you will be arriving so they can expect you, plan for your arrival, and if they are able to have someone pick you up at the bus station or airport they can arrange this. Airports and bus stations can be a long distance from your job or summer camp site. Try to call your supervisor about 48 hours before your
arrival.
