J1 VISA |

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) provides the Exchange Visitor (J)
Nonimmigrant visa for persons who are approved to participate in exchange
visitor programs in the United States. Through the U.S. Department of
State’s Exchange Visitor Program, foreign nationals may visit the United
States temporarily to teach, lecture, study, observe, conduct research,
consult, train, or demonstrate special skills. It also allows U.S.
organizations to internationalize their communities while providing
practical career training to emerging professionals from around the world.
Designated sponsoring organizations, such as the International YMCA,
facilitate the entry of foreign nationals into the United States to complete
the objectives of any one of 13 program categories. At the conclusion of
their program, participants are expected to return to their home countries.
Authority for the Exchange Visitor Program derives from the Fulbright-Hays
Act of 1961. The purpose of the Act is to increase mutual understanding
between the people of the United States and the people of other countries
through educational and cultural exchanges.
The YMCA is Your Visa Sponsor
The US Department has designated the International YMCA as a sponsor of the
J-1 Exchange Visitor Program for Trainees (and, pending government approval,
Interns). As a participant on the YMCA Training/Internship Program,
international university students and professionals are eligible for J-1
visas and the opportunity to visit and experience the United States while
also allowing them to fund their stay in America.
