Luckily there is a pretty easy formula for coming up with the cubic yardage of your yard or next project, which will make buying the right amount of materials a whole lot easier.

## How Many Cubic Yards of Materials do You Need to Complete Your Yard?

The first thing that you must do is convert everything to the same unit of measurement, and being that you will most likely be dealing with the dimensions of a piece of land, you will want to convert all measurements into feet. Next, you will multiply all of the dimensions. For example, let’s say that you need to by gravel for a drive way that is 25ft long, 7ft wide, and you want to pour the concrete about 9in deep. First you must convert the 9in dimension into feet. There are 12 inches in a foot, so you divide the 9 inches by 12, and you get .75, which you would then round up to .8. Now you are ready to multiply your dimensions: (25*7=175*.8=140). Now you need to divide your total of cubic feet, 140, by the number of feet that make up a cubic yard, which is 27. So, divide 140/27=5.185.

You round up to the nearest tenth, and now you know that you need 5.2 cubic yards of material to complete your project.

As you can see, the formula itself isn’t complicated, and it can be made that much easier by a cubic yard calculator. However, for the true do it yourselfer, now you can do the math yourself as well.
