SEVIS—Student Exchange Visitor Information System
SEVIS, created following September 11th, is an arm of Homeland Security and designed to track internationals that enter the United States legally with a visa. All J-1 visa participants sponsored by the International YMCA are given a SEVIS number (all numbers begin N000….). This number can be found on the participant’s DS-2019 form.
Upon entry to the United States, it is noted that the J-1 participant has arrived. It is VERY IMPORTANT that the participant be VALIDATED in SEVIS upon arrival at the U.S. host site. This confirms that the participant has reached the destination for which the visa has been granted and issued. The visa becomes invalid if the SEVIS validation is not done within thirty (30) days. Ideally, the SEVIS validation should be done within 24-hours of arrival at the U.S. host site (camp, conference center, etc.)
