Upon arrival in the United States, your ICCP staff attend one of eight orientation programs lasting 48 hours. Many camp
directors have requested a summary of the orientation content so that they may supplement and reinforce information given to ICCP staff rather than duplicate the information.
All ICCP orientations include the following:
1.) An official welcome to the United States and to ICCP. The purpose is to:
A.) establish that the participants
are part of something greater than themselves;
B.) build identity as ICCP participants; and,
C.) build pride in the ICCP program.
2.) Immediate Needs & Introduction to US Culture. The purpose is to:
A.) understand US currency & coins,
B.) understand how to use the phones,
C.) participate in a U.S. pop culture quiz.
3.) Formal session on Child Abuse and Sexual Harassment Issues.
The purpose is to:
A.) focus on the cultural differences between we
treat children and the opposite sex,
B.) introduce ways in which American Camp
Directors understand and enforce compliance to camp rules around these topics.
4.) Camp Songs and Games. The purpose is to:
A.) introduce the tradition of camp songs and
games to the ICCP participants who may not have had this experience in their home countries,
B.) introduce the theory for why songs and games
are part of most camps, provide the opportunity for each participant to learn at least one camp song and one game, and have fun.
5.) Cross-Cultural Skills Training. The purpose is to:
A.) expand the awareness of what the ICCP
participant's own cultural assumptions are;
B.) provide the opportunity for each participant
to learn of at least three different values commonly held by persons of another culture; and,
C.) prepare the participant to be receptive to
differences between their own culture and that of the United States.
7.) Legal regulations governing program. The purpose is to:
introduce and explain regulations regarding maintaining insurance coverage,
explain length of stay regulations,
explain policy regarding early departure from program.
8.) Cultural Sharing. The purpose is to:
A.) give all participants the experience of
sharing their culture in a fun, structured format; and,
B.) develop a greater appreciation of each other's
customs and traditions.
Additionally, all ICCP participants receive a detailed pre-departure manual in their home country.
The goal of orientation is to welcome participants to the US, to equip them with questions to ask the camp supervisors, and to introduce them to the fun business of camp
