Social Security

Process:

Explain what a Social Security card is and what it is for.

A social security card is a Tax reporting card. You will need a card with a number in order to get paid at camp. Social Security Administration Office representatives will visit ICCP Arrival Orientation to help you process your social security number.

 

Participants should know that the Social Security card is not an insurance card. The number is given for life.  Participants returning to the U.S. MUST bring the card with them and should memorize their number.

 

Completing the Social Security Application:

1. Participants need their passport, DS-2019 and I- 94
   
2. The Social Security application form is opened to the questionnaire page.
   
3. Participants are told to fill in their names as they appear on their passports. (Use black or blue pens)
   
4. Participants are told to use their camp address (see participant’s placement notice). If they don’t have a camp yet they should use the ICCP address:

5. Explain that “mother’s maiden name” is your mother’s original name at birth, before she was married.
   
6. Participants are non -resident aliens allowed to work (they are not students).
   
7. The birth date is entered month/day/year.
   
8. The form is completed by “Self”
   
9. Application must be signed.

 

The facilitator checks the forms to make sure they are completed accurately. There are no extra forms so be sure to tell your group to be calm and careful filling them out.

 

Participants are instructed to put their documents (passport, DS- 2019 forms and their completed social security application) in their packet and in a safe place. They must bring this with them to the ICCP Arrival Orientation in the USA.

VERY IMPORTANT REMINDERS

·       Explain to participants that they must bring the Social Security application and the sponsor letter to the ICCP arrival orientation.

·       Explain that they must bring their passports, DS 20-19 form and I-94 card and the sponsor’s letter (included in their packet). Show copy of letter.

·       Explain that the social security administration has stated that the verification process may take up to 12 weeks. Some participants will have completed their camps before they receive their social security cards. In that case, they must leave with their camp director an address in their home country where the card should be mailed.
