How to Have a
Successful Summer |

You are an international camp staff member. That is why you have
been given an exchange visitor visa and the opportunity to come to this country. We hope that you will come to know a portion of United States culture and that those with whom you come in
contact at camp will learn about you and your homeland.
Many camp directors are experienced in using international staff members to
provide cross-cultural awareness in their camps. In fact, many camps have already planned programs based on your country. However, other camp directors are not so experienced. This may
be their first time to host international staff members. You might be able to help them by suggesting activities to raise the international awareness level at camp. However, be careful
and tactful when you make suggestions. Some people resist new ideas. |

folk dance programs, simple songs, unique games |

international festival (mini world fair with songs and games) |
|||||

international Christmas in July (with your Christmas customs) |
|||||
|
international village (each cabin is a different country); include “Camp Olympics” or “model United Nations” |

|
informal language instruction (teaching a new word or a simple song each day) |

|
international nature hikes (explaining how the camp environment differs from yours) |
|||||
|
metric camping (familiarizing your campers with the metric system) |
|||||
|
celebration of one of your national holidays (Independence Day, Bastille Day, etc.) |

|
international display (putting up map, pictures, flag of your country) |
|||||
|
international meal (arranging with the cook to prepare a food typical of your country) |
