Recognizing Distinguished Service to the YMCA

The Harold C. Smith Award honors leaders who have provided distinguished service to the YMCA.  This annual award is named for Harold C. Smith, CFA, retired President & CEO of the YMCA Retirement Fund.  Harold channeled his extraordinary expertise and energy primarily in two areas during his career: the development of international programs and worldwide linkages for local YMCAs in the United States, and the growth of the YMCA Retirement Fund to support career employees.

Theodore H. Ashford

Ted Ashford has been a trustee of the YMCA Retirement Fund since 1993. He serves on the Compensation, Governance and Investment Committees. He is Chairman and CEO of Ashford Capital Management, Inc.  He is also Secretary of the Investment Committee of the Delaware Public  Employee's Retirement System, a member of the University of Delaware Research Foundation Finance Committee, and a Trustee and member of the Finance Committee of Christiana Care Corporation.  He also serves as Trustee and Director of a number of private foundations and corporations. He received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Harvard University.

Jerry Prado Shaw

Jerry Prado Shaw began his YMCA career in 1960 in La Paz, Bolivia, then Moved to successive international assignments in Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama.  He has extensive experience in youth work, community development and refugee work. In 1986, he received the prestigious award Orden Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the highest Panamanian honor for service to the youth of the country.  He is a YMCA Senior Director, and he holds a B.S. Degree in Youth Work and YMCA Administration.  His academic qualifications also include the equivalent of a degree in Business Administration granted by Columbia University.
